look what came in from obama’s economic advisers. obama must be perplexed.

——–

Licensing hurts workers

Occupational licensing locks countless of people out of dignified and meaningful job opportunities.

The CEA report indicates that more than a quarter of all workers in the United States need a government license or permit to legally work. Two-thirds of the increase in licensing since the 1960s is attributable to an increase in the number of professions being licensed, not to growth within traditionally licensed professions like law or medicine.

The data show that licensed workers earn on average 28 percent more than unlicensed workers. Only some of this observed premium is accounted for by the differences in education, training and experience between the two groups. The rest comes from reducing supply, locking competitors out of the market and extracting higher prices from consumers.

We need to keep rates low so the debt is serviceable and these people get paid b@tchez!

Ceo’s need to cash out their stock options too. most of their pay revolves around performance of the stock. what a better way to do that than rigging your companies stock price by borrowing money via bonds or the money market and buying back stock?

Corporate debt went from 3.5 trillion to 7 trillion since the last crisis.

My lifetime comp is heavily weighted towards ISOs given how things have gone for the company, but on an annual basis, RSUs are probably about the same. Given the vesting schedule (4 years), it depends on how you account for things.

So they can go from being working poor to destitute poor? Let’s start by slapping a 35% tariff on “American” companies that off-shore jobs and production. Then a 90% tax on any CEO pay and stock options in excess of $1 million. Then a Tobin tax to stop high-frequency trading in its tracks. And make interest income tax free so you’re not getting further ripped off in the Fed’s ZIRP scam.

Why not both?

Example: Red light traffic cameras do two things: Increase revenue and reduce red-light running.

Example: Speed cameras do two things: Increase revenue and reduce speed on a road.

Licensing does two things: Reduces the supply of workers and raises on average, the quality of the goods or services they provide (although failures certainly exist), as well as the cost. They key is finding the point of optimal social welfare. This is of interest to society at large when it involves things like bridge builders or medical professionals.

Can it be abused? Of course, when a trade association is able to create arbitrary laws designed to protect profits.

Why not both?

Comment by drumminj
2015-09-04 08:23:17

why would we want to artificially limit supply?

Someone is paying the cost of these services. By suggesting to artificially limit supply, you’re saying you purposefully want to make people spend more of their money for the same service.

Comment by Neuromance
2015-09-04 08:49:42

You’ve raised a question which touches on a key point.

We want to license (which as a side effect limits supply) because people’s information is highly imperfect about the supply of goods and services.

With health care professionals, it’s very difficult to obtain information about their success records and capabilities and censures (and unfortunately, even some very bad ones will be licensed by their licensing authorities).

With bridge building engineers and contractors, again, same issue.

With taxi drivers, barbers, etc, again, same issue.

Can a trade association abuse the issue, skewing licensing which adds nothing to social welfare, but only increases profits for the members of the trade association? Of course. NAR is a classic example. Also look at the link I posted earlier, with the funeral business having an arbitrary law passed when they greased sufficient politicians’ palms.

tl;dr: I think licensing is good if it increases social welfare. It becomes bad if it becomes a tool (or a weapon) which doesn’t increase social welfare but merely increases profits for the trade group while increasing costs, with no benefits, for the public at large.

i think this part of the article covers some of what you’re talking about..

—-

in the name of promoting quality, licensing regulations perversely raise costs and reduce choices for consumers.

The CEA concludes that, by imposing entry barriers against potential competitors who could undercut the prices of incumbent suppliers, licensing raises prices for consumers by between 3 and 16 percent.

Moreover, the effect of licensing on product quality is unclear. The report notes that the empirical literature doesn’t demonstrate an increase in quality from licensure.

By restricting supply, licensing dulls the incentive for incumbents to provide the best quality products because the threat of new entrants competing with better offerings is diminished.

Perversely, the inflated prices offered by licensed providers may force some consumers to seek unlicensed providers, or to use less effective substitutes, or to do jobs themselves — in some cases increasing the risk of accidents.

In a blow to the notion of efficient government bureaucracy, the CEA indicates that government licensing boards routinely fail in monitoring licensed providers, contributing to the lack of improvement in quality.

what do professional organizations want most? they want power or ‘clout’.

how can they get more power? increase membership in their organizations.

how do they get more people into their organizations? they lower their standards so more will qualify.

what is the net result? lower standards.

is there a better method than licensing? yes, reputation.

why does reputation have less impact now? because licensing creates the believe that licensing eliminates the need for reputation.

net result? no one cares near as much about reputation. so, reputation has much less power/clout than it used to have.

I am ridiculously overeducated. I am numerate. I can say for sure that you have to know what you are doing in order to pass that exam.

Same goes for my P.E. exam. You gonna trust an illegal alien who can’t read a level, and who comes from a culture in which corruption is ingrained, to build in structural integrity for a multi-story house?

looks like i hit close to home. you have skin in the game. i can understand your reaction.

you are convinced in the benefits of professional licensing because you have known nothing else. none of us have. we’re in a professional organization world now.

you somehow mistakenly think i’m for allowing invaders into this country (i don’t know how you got to that) and giving them jobs and other benefits. or allowing them to build a multi-story house for me (where apparently you’d like me to die). but there are many examples here on this blog where i state just the opposite of what you believe. your argument in this area is a strawman. i have never wanted amnesty for ‘illegal aliens’, (an incorrect term the way you use it). your implication that i’d trust some ‘illegal alien’ to construct anything for me is to put it mildly, without merit.

i’ll tell you whom i would trust to build my house though.. i’d trust an experienced builder whose livelihood was solely dependent on his profession. i’d trust him not to let any non-qualified person near the construction without close supervision. i’d trust that he not only wouldn’t want a huge lawsuit that might bust him, but that he’d also want a sterling reputation.

further, i’d trust him to know much more than what is required in those exams. much more. as a matter of fact, i’m sure he’d consider newly the minted licensees mere rookies. and even if they passed with flying colors, he’d still want to make sure things were done his way. i’m talking about a highly experienced person running the company. i’d rather have him start and train people in his company on his own even without licensing. he’d know what they could do and what they couldn’t. they’d have to come up through the ranks based on their skill. he’d know them well.

in summary, i’d trust a great builder with a sterling rep to supply the training and experience along the way to build my house, much more than a newly licensed builder starting out on his own, no matter how high his test scores were.

of course the law won’t let those types of people work without a license. therefore, they’re dragged into mediocrity by the system. they can’t rise above it because the rules of the professional organizations won’t allow it. too many of them in the organization wouldn’t make it on their own. they’ve got to protect their cushy lifestyles. life is easy for them and that’s the way they like it.

i’ve known powerful people in profession organizations. the ones at the top. i’ve seen how it works.

The point is that a system built on something other than a meritocracy isn’t some wonderful silver bullet. It can serve to disincentivize and tick off otherwise high effort employees–even to the point where they leave.

To your point about this not being analogous to socialism…I disagree. The CEO increasing pay to the employees, but ONLY to the lowest earners, is akin to wealth redistribution. When high-performing people feel that their efforts are being taken advantage of or less appreciated, they simply leave.

My friend’s family immigrated to the US 40 years ago. The push that caused them to leave the UK was that the country politically was moving far left (this was pre-Thatcher). Tax rates were high, there was social unrest, there was talk of “wealth redistribution”, etc. So, they took their brainpower and wealth, and left. They had seen how socialism had worked elsewhere in Europe and decided against sticking around.

No one that I know wants people to be living in poverty. However, at the same time, they don’t want there to be a large program of handouts either. I find myself in the same camp as people who are in favor of:

1. Placing more of a focus on trade schools (and less of a focus on everyone getting a 4-year degree);
2. Taking a hard look at subsidies that are provided for college (that can serve to simply make it more expensive);
3. Providing businesses incentives and tax-breaks for providing on-the-job training for people who are otherwise unqualified for positions.

There are ways to help those at the bottom without simply waving a wand and giving them a “minimum income”.

He didn’t cut anyone’s salary other than his own. So if there’s any redistribution going on, it’s from the CEO and maybe the other owners of the company. Though usually when the terms socialism and redistribution are used pejoratively, it’s because the government is compelling something.

I took another look at the article and it appears that two employees left a company than has more than a hundred. Neither of them left because they got a better offer. In other words, they weren’t underpaid as far the local labor market is concerned. One of them felt that was underpaid relatively to some of her co-workers. So the turmoil in the company, such as it is, really has to do with psychology of groups rather than socialism, markets, whatever.

The loss of those two employees has to be balanced against the greater loyalty of a larger number. Besides that, when they have to hire new people, they’ll be able to get the best people in Seattle.

If you look at the comments on the article, it does appear that many people think that there a lot of their fellow citizens who are just lazy and don’t deserve a nice income. Maybe others have some sort of religious belief in “free market capitalism” and are upset about this CEO betraying his class interests.

Nearly a million homeowners have no way of paying off their mortgages because they opted for interest-only loans, according to Citizens Advice.

The new figure is much higher than previous estimates from lenders and from the City watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Citizens Advice said 934,000 owners did not have a plan for how to pay back the money at the end of the mortgage term.

It warned that time was running out for some to organise their finances.

They faced having to sell their homes or even have the property repossessed if they were unable to find other funds, the charity said.

People are smart, in so many ways:

“Nearly a million homeowners have no way of paying off their mortgages because they opted for interest-only loans, according to Citizens Advice.”

“Citizens Advice said 934,000 owners did not have a plan for how to pay back the money at the end of the mortgage term.”

“It warned that time was running out for some to organise their finances.”

“They faced having to sell their homes or even have the property repossessed if they were unable to find other funds, the charity said.”

People: Dumb ‘em down, and profit.

…and what, pray tell, is preventing the homeowner from making a voluntary overpayment every month and applying it to the principal?

A severe case of LOM?

LOM = Lack Of Money. Once upon a time there were few cases of LOM because once upon a time the home was considered to be an ATM machine where endless withdraws of money could be extracted - why, some of this withdrawn money could even go into making the house payments.

Bahahahaha .. the idea was sold to schmucks that the house could, in effect, buy itself.

Once upon a time, but not anymore.

The debt is simply not serviceable at 5% interest.

Taxpayers Fleeing Democrat-Run States for Republican Ones
American’s for Tax Reform | Sept. 4, 2015 | Paul Blair

In 2013, more than 200,000 people on net fled states with Democrat governors for ones run by Republicans, according to an analysis of newly released IRS data by Americans for Tax Reform.

“People move away from high tax states to low tax states. Every tax refugee is sending a powerful message to politicians,” said ATR President Grover Norquist. “They are voting with their feet. Leaders in Texas and Florida are listening. New York and California are not.”

That year, Democrat-run states lost a net 226,763 taxpayers, bringing with them nearly $15.7 billion in adjusted gross income (AGI). That same year, states with Republican governors gained nearly 220,000 new taxpayers, who brought more than $14.1 billion in AGI with them.

Top 5 loser states for Democrat governors in 2013:

· New York (114,929 people with $5.7 billion in AGI)

· Illinois (68,943 people with $3.8 billion in AGI)

· California (47,458 people with 3.8 billion in AGI)

· Connecticut (14,453 people with $1.8 billion in AGI)

· Massachusetts (11,915 people with $1 billion in AGI)

Top 5 winner states for Republican governors in 2013:

· Texas (152,912 people with $6 billion in AGI)

· Florida (74,094 people with 8.3 billion in AGI)

· South Carolina (29,176 people with 1.6 billion in AGI)

· North Carolina (26,207 people with $1.5 billion in AGI)

· Arizona (16,549 people with $1.5 billion in AGI)

Yeah, we heard that ridiculous scenario from the “California is the next Greece” crowd — who have been proven dead wrong. Short answer is the productive members aren’t leaving because there are economic opportunities that exist here that don’t exist anywhere else. That’s why California is, by a large margin, the No. 1 state in the U.S. for venture capital start-ups, bar none.

Like 5 million people left California while some figur just under 4 million entered California. I do think it is a net exodus of pensioners and other retirees. Some or most of those pensioners thrived on high Cakifornia taxes and wealth redistribution. They will vote in the states they moved to. They will vote against any taxes on pensions but will vote for big spending. Texas, Arizona, and Nevada will go blue at some point the more it keeps up. It is not a bad thing. There will be no wealth to confiscate except from dark skinned people.

MightyMike,

That $80k is a relatively high number compared to some of the other states.

I candidly think that it is made up of the combination of some GIANT fish who have already made their money and are just fed up with higher and higher taxes (I’ve heard more than one anecdote of people packing up and moving to Austin or Incline Village), and lower income folks who just can’t figure out how to make it all work with the cost of living.

Comment by MightyMike
2015-09-04 15:32:43

It could be a mix of people at many different income levels. I happen to know two retired couples who spent their working years in San Jose and then retired to Elk Grove, which is just outside Sacramento. Both couples have incomes that are a lot less than $160,000. They’re not saving much on taxes, but their cost of living is still much lower because housing is cheaper. Taxes are not the only thing that makes living in the Bay Area, LA, etc. so expensive. Taxes may be less important than the housing costs for a lot of people.

As long as people think voting results in peaceful, nonviolent change (it’s quite the opposite) then people will vote. As long as they hear other people say voting is the only way to produce peaceful and nonviolent change, they will not think of any alternative or produce new alternatives. Grades kindergarten through 12 indoctrinate the sheep into worshipping the state. It takes an independent strong mind to break out of the matrix and see it for what it really is. But more people are breaking out.

People now are aware of false flags which are used to grow the power of tyrants in America. So they are examining everything they have been taught in government schools.

And it spreads just like a fire
Slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don’t know why, white liar

You better be careful what you do
I wouldn’t wanna be in your shoes
If they ever found you out
You better be careful what you say
It never really added up anyway
I got friends in this town

Hey white liar
The truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire
Slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don’t know why, white liar

You said you went out to a bar
And walked some lady to her car
But your face has more to tell
‘Cause my cousin saw you on the street
With a red head named Bernice
Turns out you don’t lie too well

Hey white liar
The truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire
Slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don’t know why, white liar

Here’s a bombshell just for you
Turns out I’ve been lying too

Does it matter? All religions are bad. We shouldn’t have a president that subscribes to any religion. I know they probably just say they do to get the votes, otherwise the mouthbreathers in the USA won’t vote for them. But yea. Fighting over invisible sky wizards has no place in modern society.

Yes.

All religions are equally bad. Freedom, economic opportunity, property and women are treated just the same no matter where you go when religion is involved.

And all non-religious leaders are great. Just look at the atheist leaders of Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, Castro and the current leader of North Korea for inspiration.

Religion is a fairytale people that can’t face reality tell themselves. People that can’t face reality have no business governing anyone. If there weren’t so many, the practical thing would be to institutionalize them.

Because Great Britain today is awesome!

Religion gets a bad name because it is and has been mis-used. But up until recent times, it was the only civilizing force on the planet and a preserver and patron of the arts and letters. It is said that a group of monks in Ireland preserved and added to written works during the Dark Ages.

A belief in the spirit is important and gives man a sense of responsibility for the future.

At one time, most major religions believed in human re-birth, including the Christian religions. Emperor Justinian suppressed that under pain of death. Why? Commerce and inheritance laws. It was bad for business.

Trust me, if people thought (or knew, depending on your point of view) they were coming back, this planet would be in vastly better shape, and people would be much better behaved.

Instead, what do we get? YOLO and a poisoned planet.

Took a day off from work since my large furniture is being moved from Phoenix to Orange County “just south of Irvine”…it is a “white glove” move and they do all the packing. I will surely miss my tranquil Phienix place. Where I also feel safe and secure. But I ran the numbers and I spend about $18,000 per year maintaining my Phoenix residence. My job opportunities are better in Orange County. If wisre comes to worse I will go back on welfare - defense contracting, which is socialism of the right wing variety. Movers are expected anytime (here in Phoenix now) and I am all set. Will just have to deal with small boxes after that.

The Kim Davis episode is useful because it reveals exactly how the domestic Christian Taliban think: they are willing to sacrifice anything and everything in the Constitution to impose their values on the rest of us. In their view, God’s law always trumps Man’s law. If the Christian Taliban were in power, the Bill of Rights would only exist if you acted in compliance with Scripture.

PRESS RELEASE
5-29-13

EEOC Sues Star Transport, Inc. for Religious Discrimination

PEORIA, Ill. - Star Transport, Inc., a trucking company based in Morton, Ill., violated federal law by failing to accommodate two employees because of their religion, Islam, and discharging them, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today.

The lawsuit alleged that Star Transport refused to provide two employees with an accommodation of their religious beliefs when it terminated their employment because they refused to deliver alcohol. According to EEOC District Director John P. Rowe, who supervised administrative investigation prior to filing the lawsuit, “Our investigation revealed that Star could have readily avoided assigning these employees to alcohol delivery without any undue hardship, but chose to force the issue despite the employees’ Islamic religion.”

Failure to accommodate the religious beliefs of employees, when this can be done without undue hardship, violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion. The EEOC filed suit, (EEOC v. Star Transport, Inc., Civil Action No. 13 C 01240-JES-BGC, U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois in Peoria, assigned to U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid), after first attempting to reach a voluntary settlement through its statutory conciliation process. The agency seeks back pay and compensatory and punitive damages for the fired truck drivers and an order barring future discrimination and other relief.

#1 She was elected. Just like obama.

Kim Davis has broken her oath of office and has been convicted of civil contempt. She should be impeached. If Congress thinks Obama has broken his oath they are welcome to bring impeachment proceedings against him. That’s how the law works.

#2 Gay marriage is not a “law.”

No, but laws prohibiting gay marriage are laws, they exist in many states and the Court struck them down as unconstitutional. The Supreme Court acted within their duties.

See the history of Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is not a good example. She wanted to ride the bus like any other patron; her request was inclusionary. Kim Davis is saying, in effect, only heterosexuals can ride the bus and gays must exit. Her position is exclusionary, the opposite of Rosa’s.

JoshuaTree extension at Chrome Web Store

It’s a near-complete re-write with some functionality culled. As I use it more and discover what missing functionality is actually useful, I’ll likely add some back.

“I wonder how many of the 94 mill with out jobs graduated from college?”

Seek, and ye shall find:

“This spring, an estimated 2.8 million university graduates will enter the U.S. workforce with bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees just as America’s unemployment rate hits its lowest level in nearly seven years. Cause for celebration, right? Not so fast.

“The millennial generation is still lagging in the workplace, just as it did last year. It makes up about 40 percent of the unemployed in the U.S., says Anthony Carnevale, a director and research professor for Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce.”

“Carnevale’s center found that the employment rate for young graduates was the worst around the ages of 21 to 25, with the employment rate for that segment falling from 84 percent in 2000 to 72 percent in 2012.”

This didn’t exactly answer your question, but it was close.

Don’t want to rent to Section 8 recipients because they might trash your house? That’s a suin’. By the government.

BOSTON – A property owner and manager have been sued by Attorney General Maura Healey for violating state anti-discrimination and consumer protection laws when they denied an individual a rental unit on the basis of the source of his income.

The AG’s Office alleges that the defendants refused to rent an apartment in Woburn to the individual based on his receipt of assistance through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program and the requirements of the rental assistance program.

“Discrimination against prospective tenants who receive public or housing assistance is against the law,” AG Healey. “These programs help low-income families obtain affordable and safe housing, and landlords cannot use the requirements of these programs as an excuse to refuse to rent.”

Hmmmm … if a Section 8 rental needs to meet certain requirements before it will be qualified to be rented out as a Section 8 then it seem to me that all the landlord needs to do is prevent his rental from passing the requirements.

Comment by Combotechie
2015-09-04 13:03:05

Here’s this:

“Can a landlord decide not to rent to me because I have a Section 8 voucher?

“An owner cannot deny you an apartment only because you have a Section 8 voucher. If you meet the same requirements as someone without a voucher, the owner cannot discriminate against you. In most cases, it is against the law for an owner, property manager or real estate broker to tell you that they do not accept vouchers. It is also generally illegal to discriminate based on your sex, race, disability, family status, national origin or income source—including a housing rental assistance. Please tell your Housing Counselor if you think you have been unfairly denied housing. Visit our Fair Housing page for more information about your rights.”

And here’s this:

“What standards do HAPHousing housing inspectors use?

“Our housing inspectors inspect according to minimum habitability and program requirements as established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). These standards are collectively referred to as Housing Quality Standards (HQS).

“HQS were developed to insure that all homes leased under Section 8 will be safe, decent and sanitary. It is important to remember that these are minimum standards, and that under Massachusetts law, all rental properties must meet State Sanitary Code as well.”

Lots of “experts” tell you to store your gold overseas. Well that is not in your possession. They will try to scare you in thinking your gold or silver will be confiscated. Far less likely now than in 1933 when people were PAID in gold and silver. There are probably huge scams in places like Singapore that dwarf the Austin one.
