“Are you among the lucky few working Americans at a point when labor force participation is at a historically low rate?”

Indeed I am, lucky for several reasons, and three of these reasons are:

1. I belong to a labor union and …

2. I work in a non-right to work state, and …

3. My job is such a type that it cannot be exported.

IOW, I have it made in the shade. And, to add a bonus reason, the wizards that run the company have adopted the all wonders of Six Sigma, hence I not only get to go to work, I also get to be entertained while I am there.

Life is good.

Planet Still Standing 500 Days After French Foreign Minister Warned of ‘Climate Chaos’

8:08 AM, Sep 29, 2015 • By JERYL BIER

In May 2014, French foreign minister Laurent Fabius declared during a joint appearance with Secretary of State John Kerry that “we have 500 days to avoid climate chaos.” Late last week, time ran out. Fabius’s original remarks were as follows:

Well, I’m very happy to be with John. There is no week without a phone call or a visit between John and myself, and we have on the agenda many items, many issues – Iran, because negotiations are resuming today; the question of Syria, and we shall meet next Thursday in London together; Ukraine as well; and very important issues, issue of climate change, climate chaos. And we have – as I said, we have 500 days to avoid climate chaos. And I know that President Obama and John Kerry himself are committed on this subject and I’m sure that with them, with a lot of other friends, we shall be able to reach success on this very important matter.

As THE WEEKY STANDARD reported in May 2014, it is unclear exactly where the foreign minister came up with 500 days, but France is hosting the “21st Conference of the Parties on Climate Change” in from November 30 to December in Paris. The conference is scheduled to begin 565 days after the foreign minister originally issued his warning.

“Behind every great fortune lies a great crime.”

This depends on whether the fortune was create by adding value (by say, creating a new technology, like a Google, or Intel or Cisco) , or whether the fortune was created via extractive means, like fraud which is bailed out by the taxpayer, or subtle theft from the populace.

The Robber Barons of yore at least left vast infrastructure in their wake, as they created value and also committed crimes. Today’s Robber Barons, primarily in the FIRE sector are most certainly merely extractive.

You bring to mind a question that came to mind when I recently helped my aging parents with their finances. I noticed that some financial planner that advised my dad got them to buy some annuities in Mom’s name a couple of decades ago. Dad had these listed on his asset summary at current market value, but my folks never submitted the form to request payments on these contracts. My impression is that the contracts would expire worthless unless they submit the payment election form.

My question is, how much bank are insurers making by selling annuities to old people who let them expire before receiving any benefits because they don’t understand the product? Seems like a potentially large scam.

Comment by Watson
2015-10-03 14:35:28

We’d need more details on the type of your Dad’s contracts, were they joint/survivor, is your Mom deceased, etc. But I have some experience with annuities and this doesn’t pass the smell test. I find it hard to believe that your Dad has lost significant money on an annuity because of a paperwork oversight.

Comment by Professor Bear
2015-10-03 23:01:18

Mom’s alive and thriving at the ripe old age of 87 and the two contracts they own are in her name. Dad is in much less robust health, at similar age but with a chronic degenerative medical condition.

To start payments, they have to choose between a range of options which include either life only or joint/survivor, and also whether to include a guaranteed period (e.g. life only with 5 years guaranteed would pay out for at least 5 years, regardless of whether Mom survives to age 92).

Which form of payment would you elect under the circumstances? (I have my answer in hand, but am curious what others would suggest…)

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Comment by Watson
2015-10-04 13:42:37

I wouldn’t take joint/survivor because you’d be accepting a lower payment in return for the (apparently unlikely) possibility of your Dad continuing to receive payments in the event he outlives your Mom.

As for the guaranteed period, that’s only an issue for you yourself (or whoever their heirs are). If the amounts are substantial and you would feel cheated if your Mom died soon after the annuitization, you may want to take a 5-year guarantee.

Also, if just taking cash is an option, they may want to consider that, if they need money to cover medical bills, etc.

Went and visited a couple of my recently “bought out to go away” buddies last week.

For starters, their “buy outs” were ridiculously low. Supervisors and engineers with 25-30 years in were only getting about $75-90k.

Most are doing work locally. All the jobs worth having are filled by the local word-of-mouth networks before ever getting to HR. They can get by, because their houses in BFE are paid for. And the few jobs that are put out to the public suck, and don’t pay enough to justify a relocation.

So we have the chicken/egg argument. Did the crappy job market create the FSA, or did the FSA create the crappy “can’t find anyone qualified who will work for table scraps” job market.

Having observed decent paying jobs disapper from this country for the past 40 years, I’m going with “A”.

That’s actually generous now. I’m hearing of places just giving those people their walking papers and 30 days pay.

For the benefit of our non US HBB’ers, in the USA they don’t have to pay you any severance when you are laid off. They only offer you something in exchange for your signature on the dotted line, where you promise to not sue for wrongful termination.

Income from 2-3 jobs, minus the costs associated with holding those jobs (transportation, child care, assuming you can afford it, dead time shuttling between jobs) = $3-4/hour?

IOW, you can go broke sooner and well rested, or go broke later and worn completely out.

The money paid to the FSA is the defacto “minimum wage”. Republicans want to eliminate goodies to the FSA, essentially dropping the minimum wage to zero.

Hello deflation. Good luck selling your house, at any price.

Thanks to the NRA, there are plenty of ways for the wretched refuse to supplement their income. Pretty soon, the cops won’t even bother filling out a report, unless someone gets killed, or the loss is over $5000. And as crime statistics have shown us… If there isn’t a report= it didn’t happen = low advertised crime rate.

They would have screamed bloody murderer if it was Shrub/Cheney. The anti war movement is nothing to do with peace. It’s tool for the lefties to gain power. Once they gain power, they will kill, maim as ruthlessly as the right.

lefty State worshippers.

Hey, we said “stuff happens”. What more do you want?

If those doctors had been carrying, they could have shot those planes out of the sky. It’s probably all fake anyway, just an excuse to take our armed drones away, so only the government has them. And the criminals.

And anyway, Doctors Without Borders sounds commie to me.

I already have been cussed at by a lieberal State worshippers with my post of this on FB. Then he said I am name calling. He was so mad he lost any sense of reason if he had any to begin with. It was delightful making him angry and defend Obama. He said I was demeaning Obama. I asked how come pointing out Obama’s hypocrisy is demeaning? Oh you leftists love free speech as long as it is favorable to leftism…

Libertarian’s have no news media. We cannot stand the gunsg ho war mi gearing and hysteria about immigrants from the right. We cannot stand the anti gun hysteria and anti capitalism from the left on MSNBC.

We libertarians use Lew Rockwell, Ron Paul institute for peace and prosperity, anything by Andrew Napoitano, zero Hedge, anti war.com for our media.

Houston, we do not have liftoff ??

There are only two that are considering raising rates…USA & BOE…Everyone else is cutting or have cut…Draghie’s monthly purchases are going all the way to the end of 2016…

I really don’t think a .0025 increase is going to have any impact directly on our markets…I think its already baked-in…The problem is it will strengthen our dollar against the other world currencies even further….

If we see further deterioration in the job numbers particularly significant revisions downward I think you are right;

“Houston, we do not have liftoff”…

One would think that the President would make the difference but with the divide is so great there is not much left in the middle to get to meaningful things done…With this great divide we have, maybe the answer is autonomy…Let each state pass and have their the own laws…If you don’t like the laws of your state, move to one that you like…

Um, yeah. In December 1995 the Russian General Staff said they would crush the Chechen rebels in two weeks. Then they drove in Grozny and got their asses handed to them. And they still haven’t totally suppressed the insurgents in the Caucasus.

During the war in Chechnya the Russian Ministry of Defense used to release daily tallies of “illegal armed formation” members wiped out, “command centers” hit, etc. It was a joke. Shamil Basayev used to release mocking counterpoints of his own, noting that by Russian MOD figures, every Chechen rebel had been kiled at least five times over. You don’t finish off insurgents from the air. You have to find, fix, and finish them on the ground as well, and that would take tens of thousands of troops. Let the Russians and Chinese deal with that quagmire.

Could be. I remember reading somewhere that both the CIA and KGB, back in the 1970s, each nurtured competing Muslim sects, appealing to their extreme religious edicts, arming and using them as proxies, mainly in Afghanistan. So the old USSR is just as culpable. I guess the CIA’s was Al Queda, not sure what the KGB’s was.

Prior to that, “radical” Islam was pretty much on the way out. But oh, no, the deep states of both the US and USSR had to go and revive it, not only revive it, but put it on steroids and create the craziness we see today. Sick.

In 2008, when the Federal Reserve perpetrated the biggest screw-job on US taxpayers in American history, 95% of the electorate nonetheless meekly bent over and grabbed their ankles on demand by voting for Wall Street water carriers. Ditto for 2012. In 2016, however, the sheeple seem to be getting angrier, and more restive against mindlessly voting for more of the same. So when the Fed bends us over again with NIRP and the next round of QE, will ‘Muricans react with the same docile complacency, or will real resistance surface?
