I really hope a big crater comes soon. Dr. Janet Yellen, please deliver. I am starting to get tired of spending $2000/month on rent for a small 1BR/1BA.

You may see some softness coming your way. Zillow indicates my house dropped in value by about 7% in the last 6 months. This is the first decline in 5 years (Sacramento foothills).

I doubt the market will “crater” though and it may just be the winter season slowdown.. The spring of 2016 will tell the tale. Keep your fingers crossed!

Better than spending $500k on a rapidly depreciating asset and doubling down on those losses($1 million) by financing it.

Remember….. If you have to finance it for 15 or 30 years, it’s not ‘affordable’ nor can you afford it.

Rollin’ in my 5.0
With my ragtop down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby, waving just to say, “Hi!”
Did you stop? No, I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I’m heading to the next block
That block was dead Yo
So I continued to A1A Beachfront Ave.

You’re feebly grasping at a sinking lifeline. Are you bad at math and English BSky? I said Brazil hadn’t had a boom in 2009. Brazil home prices had only been rising with inflation for about 10 years until 2009. After 2009 came the boom. Prices tripling/quadrupling from 2009-2014 was the boom. Is this difficult?

By 2012, I indicated to you that Brazil was in a bubble. I can post it but you’re going to look like you’re slipping.

“Was Brazil in a Real Estate Bubble too?

One of this weekend’s posts had an article about Brazil where I currently live. And I am wondering if some simple data can help determine if Brazil took part in the housing bubble.

Today’s Rio de Janeiro newspaper, O Globo has an article stating Rio’s house prices have doubled in the past 10 years.
That’s an increase a little over 7% per year.

Source: http://tinyurl.com/lj6ogh

And the official Brazil inflation rate has averaged about 7.3% the past 10 years if my math is correct.

Source: http://tinyurl.com/kug5hf

According to Case-Shiller, the average rate of housing inflation in the USA had been just above the CPI inflation rate for decades prior to the Bubble. So IF (and that’s a big if) the same criteria can be applied to determine if Brazil was in a bubble the past 10 years, the data might indicate that Brazil (or at least Rio) was NOT in a bubble the past 10 years. But this does not mean that prices can’t decline either.

It is also interesting that the Brazilian market could keep pace with inflation with the majority of purchases being all cash buyers as affordable financing is very new in Brazil. My tentative conclusion is that Brazil did not enter into much of a housing bubble but very well might have if easy financing had been available. Comments?

The Rio memoirs are probably fascinating, but the simple truth is that the Bubble which you couldn’t see then in Brazil is collapsing now.

The reason that this is interesting is that Brazil is a barometer of what is headed to places all around the world. The shame is not that Brazil sinks back into the gutter, it is that we ever had a global bubble of such gigantic proportions to begin with. It has caused a lot of damage.

but the simple truth is that the Bubble which you couldn’t see then in Brazil is collapsing now.

Well, In hindsight I saw most everything actually. I’m on record saying prices in Brazil could go down in 2009 before the housing bubble in Brazil started and I acknowledged Brazil was in a Bubble in 2102.

And I did see more than you. Face it. All you saw was a giant credit bubble that is “gonna blow up any minute” and cause TEOTWAWKI. I saw the obvious global credit bubble, but, I was able to see that even in a global credit bubble, there are differences in it’s effects on different parts of the world at different times. I said I didn’t think prices in Brazil would crash for prime houses in 2009 and they didn’t. In fact they almost quadrupled since that call. Then I called bubble in 2012. That’s quite a string of correct calls on top of my house has already paid for it’s construction in free rent. 2008-9 was a long time ago - a lot of “free” rent.

And what’s all with this “collapsing” “end of the world” “we’re doomed” right-wing apocalypse jargon? There’s nothing collapsing here. Brazil’s going through a very bad recession. And long over due. (Dude it happens)

From Wiki: “Marcotte lives with her partner in Brooklyn, New York and has no children.”

RINGS AND PAPERS, YA DIMWIT. RINGS AND PAPERS.

BTW, yesterday I was given (again) the man side of why they don’t put a ring on it. Alimony, responsible for ex-wifey spending spree, etc. Yes, I understand that. But my advice was to the women. The man wants it both ways. Get all the attention and benefits when he wants, dump her without strings when he feels like it.

Some women seem to be able to tolerate that; I never could. I still don’t know if that’s a sign of self-esteem or a fatal flaw.

If any man says “Yes I love you honey and I think you should give up your job so you can move in with me, but I won’t put a ring on it because you’re going to ruin my finances later,” the woman should refuse.

While the 2014 numbers have not been disclosed, recent statistics provided to Congress reveal that work permits continued to be issued at record numbers, according to congressional sources and statistics provided to the Washington Free Beacon.

The A in FANG is Amazon, not Apple.

“Jim Cramer thinks the economy psychology behind the massive runs in FANG — his acronym for Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google, now Alphabet — should become a case study in how stocks don’t divorce themselves from fundamentals, but they develop scarcity value.

“These high-flying stocks become something akin to modern art or professional sports teams, valuations that, while they can’t be explained by simple numbers, can be absolutely understood from the perspective that there just aren’t enough of them to go around,” the “Mad Money” host said. “

The Wolf Pack Profile-terrorism in America becoming a family affair.
Frontpagemagazine.com | December 15, 2015 | Dawn Perlmutter

It is difficult to comprehend how Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik who murdered fourteen people and wounded twenty-one in San Bernardino, California could be radicalized to commit mass murder and leave behind a six month old baby. The reason this is so difficult for Americans to grasp is the myth that there are universal values that every culture shares, particularly the love of life, pursuit of happiness, freedom and feelings such as maternal instincts. When people drastically deviate from these so called norms they are viewed as mentally ill or psychopathological. The reason mass murderers are designated as psychopaths is because the FBI’s analysis of violent crimes is based on behavioral science methodologies that primarily look at psychology and personality traits as opposed to a cultural methodology that interprets violence from the offenders point of view.

A cultural analysis of the motivations for the San Bernardino mass murder is based on the premise that the offenders were Islamic true believers. From this cultural perspective they would consider themselves to be good and righteous Muslims who were obligated to kill Satanic infidels (dis-believers). As Islamic true believers the violence would be justified as warriors, martyrs, waging holy war (jihad) against evil. As martyrs they believe they will go immediately to a higher level of paradise where they will be protected from the torments of the grave and significantly can intercede on behalf of the infant they left behind to join them in Paradise and be a family again for eternity not just their temporary time on earth. From this perspective Tashfeen Malik would be considered a good mother, one that sacrificed her life for her child. Farook would be considered a good father and son who gave up his life to intercede for his mother, daughter and other family members in Paradise. These beliefs do not meet any of the criteria for psychopathy, in fact their killings were rational choices based on their religious beliefs. The fact that most Americans find it incomprehensible demonstrates Western behavioral bias and the inability to name the enemy and comprehend the Islamic ideology that motivates the violence.

The lone wolf profile works well with active shooters who hold personal grievances, are reclusive and choose to opt out of society. Lone wolves are often true misfits not true believers. Examples of lone wolf attacks include the Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Virginia Tech school shootings. By definition lone wolves act on their own without any outside command or direction even if it is to advance a political or Islamic extremist goal. However, a new breed of Islamic terrorists are emerging that are better characterized as ‘Wolf Packs’ family groups who have a shared worldview, blood relations, common ancestry, unwavering loyalty, solidarity, conformity, hold an “‘us versus them”‘ philosophy and most significantly identify the Islamic Caliphate as their extended family community. Those that are fighting the global jihad are deemed to be the true Muslim faithful, by virtue of which they are to be protected and secured; those outside are infidel enemies who should be subjugated or massacred.

The Islamic State understands that to incite people to mass murder they have to remind them of their humiliation, disrespect and shame. That is one of their propaganda tactics. The misfit already longing for vengeance instinctively understands that violence will feel good. The Islamic State provides the moral justification that allows the loner to act upon his desires. ISIS makes clear that killing in the name of Islam is not only justified but obligatory. The misfit becomes a virtuous mass murderer whose humiliation is replaced with honor and respect by killing in the name of Allah. Jihadist mass murder functions to restore honor, serve vengeance, attain purity, save face and achieve everlasting life in paradise. And now they are hunting in packs.

I found it difficult to watch the “debate”, and tuned out after all the war mongering got started. BUT, the most priceless comment of the evening came during the undercard debate, when Pataki, in response to a question by Wolf Blitzer as to what the Don had said about Muslim immigration or some such thing, said “It’s one of the most absurd things this President has said”.

Wait, WHAT? “This President” Note to Pataki: Trump hasn’t been elected President. Yet.

The other thing that amused me was when JEB!, looking like The Beaver, started whining about Trump’s Muslim comments and pleaded “We have to engage with the Arab world”.

Wait, WHAT? That’s how we got here in the first place. Too bad Trump didn’t point out that the Bush family are the experts on “engaging” with the Arab world and look where’s it gotten us.

Also noteworthy was that The Beaver didn’t say “Muslim” world. He was very specific on “Arab” world. Arab world. And there it is. Gee, Beaver!

———————–

Tuesday’s GOP debate was Jeb Bush’s last stand, and he failed
Washington Post | December 15, 2015 | James Downie

It wasn’t supposed to go like this. When Jeb Bush announced a exploratory committee for the 2016 Republican primary exactly one year ago Wednesday, the plan was simple: Keep Mitt Romney out of the race, lock up the establishment money early and ride Bush’s experience as Florida governor and a big war chest to victory. And for a little while, the plan almost worked. Bush became the front-runner, and though his lead wasn’t as strong as his campaign might have liked, he seemed to have locked up the big donors and maintained a steady share in the polls. Then Donald Trump showed up, and the campaign quickly got away from Bush. In debate after debate and on the campaign trail, Bush stumbled and fumbled away his support. He came off worse in clashes with Trump and with Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.). He now sits fifth in Iowa, sixth in New Hampshire and at 4 percent nationally.

In short, Tuesday’s debate was Jeb Bush’s last stand. And he was unable to turn his fortunes around.

‘Donald Trump opposed the Iraq war, thinks we should be happy Putin is taking on ISIS in Syria, and more recently called Charles Krauthammer a “warmonger.” This last alone would be enough to provoke his excommunication from the ranks of acceptable GOP nominees, but to make matters worse The Donald is horning in on the neocons’ hate-all-Muslims shtick while combining it with heretical “isolationist” views. You can hear the teeth-grinding all the way from Washington and the West side of Manhattan.’

‘Ted Cruz is another highly problematic candidate from the neocon point of view. His major sin in their eyes is his co-sponsoring of the USA Freedom Act, which kinda-sorta (but not really) reined in collection of bulk meta-data by US government agencies. Aside from that, however, there’s his deviation from the neocon party line on Syria, “democracy” promotion, and the whole “regime change” policy, which has been nothing but a disaster for both the United States and its targets.’

‘In an election in which protecting the nation’s borders is at the center of the political debate, the Cruz-Paul beat-down of Rubio on this issue has effectively put him out of the running. Rubio can repeat the “radical Islamic terrorism” mantra until he’s blue in the face, but he’ll never get over this huge contradiction.’

‘The argument over regime-change in Syria, Libya and throughout the Middle East was substantial – and resulted in a clear victory for the anti-regime changers, namely Cruz and Paul. Cruz told the audience that we shouldn’t intervene in Syria’s civil war and that “as bad as [Syrian President Bashar al-]Assad was and is, radical jihadis controlling Syria would be a significant turn for the worse.” He skewered not only Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on this question, but also “the Washington Republicans,” a trenchant phrase.’

‘The Libyan intervention, says Cruz, was a “disaster,” and replacing authoritarian leaders like Qaddafi and Assad with radical jihadists is inimical to US interests. He challenged Rubio on his support for the Hillary-Obama policy of regime change in Libya – which led to chaos and jihadist dominance of that unfortunate country.’

‘This is not to say Cruz is an anti-interventionist: not by a country mile. He wants to “carpet-bomb” ISIS, and deploy “whatever ground troops are necessary.” However, he also denounces the obsession with “boots on the ground” as “a talismanic demonstration of strength. That is getting the deployment of military force precisely backwards. This is not a game of risk, where politicians move armies around to demonstrate their machismo.”

‘When he said this in his Heritage speech, this was rightly interpreted as a frontal assault on Marco Rubio, the neocon poster boy, and the reference to “machismo” was – again, rightly – seen as a hit on the chickenhawkish tendency of laptop bombardiers with impeccable neoconservative credentials but no military experience or knowledge. This provoked lots of incoming fire from such worthies as Bret Stephens, Stephen Hayes, and Max Boot. The neocons are particularly perturbed that Cruz has had the gumption to attack them by name, and their anger was channeled in this piece by Eliana Johnson and Tim Alberta in National Review:

“[W]hen Ted Cruz, on the campaign trail in Iowa and again in an interview with Bloomberg News, recently pointed the finger at ‘neocons’ in an attempt to defend his own understanding of American interests abroad, the response among some conservative foreign-policy experts – many of whom the term has been used to disparage — was of shock, anger, and dismay. ‘He knows that the term in the usual far-left and far-right parlance means warmonger, if not warmongering Jewish advisers, so it is not something he should’ve done,’ says Elliott Abrams, a former Bush administration National Security Council official and a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. ‘It’s an epithet. It’s always used pejoratively. And the main thing I resent about it is, it’s a label, it’s a way of avoiding arguments,’ says Eliot Cohen, a Bush administration State Department official and a professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.”

‘We aren’t allowed to utter the word “neoconservative,” unless of course we’re Irving Kristol, who wrote a whole book about neoconservatism, or unless we’re Eliana Johnson, one of the authors of the article cited above, who last year wrote a piece declaring “the neocons are back”!

‘We aren’t allowed to talk about the neocons because to do so would expose them for what they are: a political cult that glories in war, and has infused American politics with its toxic ideology of perpetual conflict and unmitigated statism. Talk of “neocons” also brings to the surface the neoconservative institutions that have been key to pushing America into one disastrous military adventure after another.’

Hillary/Rubio are the last neocons standing. When are the Democrats going to give her the boot?

Comment by Ben Jones
2015-12-16 06:44:08

‘As Cruz and Paul went after him, you could see the neocons’ poster boy looking visibly thrown off balance, that bland airbrushed façade pierced by an arrow shot directly into his Achilles’ heel. Rubio fought back by arguing that Cruz voted against the defense authorization bill – because it allowed the government to hold Americans without trial – but Cruz pointed out that when it comes to actually defending the nation’s borders, Rubio would have allowed people to pour into this country without any vetting.’

‘Paul made the same point: “I think that by arming the allies of ISIS, the Islamic rebels against Assad, that we created a safe space or made that space bigger for ISIS to grow. I think those who have wanted regime change have made a mistake. When we toppled Gadhafi in Libya, I think that was a mistake. I think ISIS grew stronger, we had a failed state, and we were more at risk.”

‘Paul, by the way, not only had a great night, but he also managed to land the only blow on frontrunner Trump: “I’d like to also go back to, though, another question, which is, is Donald Trump a serious candidate? The reason I ask this is, if you’re going to close the Internet, realize, America, what that entails. That entails getting rid of the First amendment, OK? It’s no small feat. If you are going to kill the families of terrorists, realize that there’s something called the Geneva Convention we’re going to have to pull out of. It would defy every norm that is America. So when you ask yourself, whoever you are, that think you’re going to support Donald Trump, think, do you believe in the Constitution? Are you going to change the Constitution?”

‘Trump’s answer was incoherent, and grimaces he made while Paul was skewering him didn’t help either.’

‘Rand Paul scored another bull’s eye in his confrontation with Chris Christie, who declared he wouldn’t hesitate to shoot down a Russian plane over Syria (because he’s from New Joisey!) “If you want World War III,” said Paul turning to Christie, “you’ve found your candidate.”

‘That was a knockout punch.’

‘And Rand had a great – even inspiring – opening statement, which had the advantage of being the first on deck:

“The question is, how do we keep America safe from terrorism? Trump says we ought to close that Internet thing. The question really is, what does he mean by that? Like they do in North Korea? Like they do in China?”

“Rubio says we should collect all Americans’ records all of the time. The Constitution says otherwise. I think they’re both wrong. I think we defeat terrorism by showing them that we do not fear them. I think if we ban certain religions, if we censor the Internet, I think that at that point the terrorists will have won. Regime change hasn’t won. Toppling secular dictators in the Middle East has only led to chaos and the rise of radical Islam. I think if we want to defeat terrorism, I think if we truly are sincere about defeating terrorism, we need to quit arming the allies of ISIS. If we want to defeat terrorism, the boots on the ground – the boots on the ground need to be Arab boots on the ground.”

“As commander-in-chief, I will do whatever it takes to defend America. But in defending America, we cannot lose what America stands for. Today is the Bill of Rights’ anniversary. I hope we will remember that and cherish that in the fight on terrorism.”

I just finished the book “A Time for Trumpets”

Excellent book. Dispels a lot of myths about the battle.

The biggest one is that the Americans ran away or surrendered - they fought hard for every mile. Even burnt out National Guard units.

Out numbered, massively out gunned, without supplies or direction - they contested everything but especially critical road junctions and bridges. Many fought to the death to hold up the Germans for a few hours.

I am sure transgender (pre and post surgery), gay and female combat troops will perform at the same level when needed.

December 15th, 1944: Mostly Quiet on the Western Front. The Bulge begins tomorrow.
US Army History | 12-15-2015 | Phillips, McManus, et al

December 15, 1944. All is mostly quiet along the western front in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. It’s cold, and the nights are dark. So dark that GI Joe, sitting and waiting, can’t see his hand in front of his face.

Four divisions of the US army are parked at a 75-mile front along the western frontier of Germany. The American commanders believe that the German Wehrmacht is finished and not capable of offensive operations.

They either haven’t been talking to some of the GI Joes in the front lines, or they aren’t taking GI Joe seriously. He has been hearing the sounds of heavy equipment moving around.

There’s a rumor that some German engineers have been captured while building a bridge, and that they’re being interrogated…

For the artillerymen attached to the 110th Infantry Regiment of the 28th Division, Pennsylvania National Guard, which has been assigned to its spot on the front in Belgium for rest after taking heavy casualties in the Hurgten Forest in the autumn months, something just doesn’t seem right…

Business goes on as usual, though, all are holding out hope that the American commanders, particularly Eisenhower and Bradley, are correct in their assessment that the worst of the European war is past, and it will all be over in the spring. All the Americans will have to do is walk into Germany, or whatever is left of it after a winter of strategic bombing by the 8th Air Force, and after the Russians have finished with it…

Dispels a lot of myths about the battle. The biggest one is that the Americans ran away or surrendered

What “myths” about the Battle of the Bulge needed to be “dispelled”? The most thing acknowledged about the battle is that we were getting our a$$es kicked by a last ditch mass attack by Hitler but we held and won at great cost.

Heck even Gen. McAuliffe’s “NUTS” reply at Bastogne highlighted American forces’ intransigence and bravery.

Dispels a lot of myths about the battle.

Heck even Gen. McAuliffe’s “NUTS” reply at Bastogne highlighted American forces’ intransigence and bravery.

That is one of the myths.

Gen. McAuliffe, when presented with the German surrender ultimatum, said to his staff, “Nuts, now how am I going to reply?”

And an aide said - “Just like that, Sir.”

It’s not a “myth”. Gen McAuliffe said something like it when presented with German surrender demands, Kinnard recommended using it and McAuliffe’s response was “NUTS”.

When McAuliffe was presented with the German surrender ultimatum, he said “Aw, nuts” and laughed.

Later, he was reminded that he was required to give the Germans a written reply. He was with his staff, trying to come up with a written reply, and was discussing it with his staff.

A member of his staff said his initial reaction would be hard to beat. Hence, “NUTS”.

Just as commentary:

-”National Guard” divisions for the most part were Guard divisions in name only by the end of 1944. Almost all of the Guardsmen that actually went overseas were mostly casualties/KIA by the end of 1944.

-Everyone has heard of Bastogne, but more important (IMO) was the Battle of the Twin Villages, where the 2nd Infantry Division and various other units (at a high cost) delayed the German advance long enough for other Divisions to fall back and form a defense on the Elsenborn Ridge, thereby keeping the the width (and number of roads) available to the German mechanized forces.

-The success of US engineering units blowing up bridges in front of German spearheads highlights the big problem I have with the movie “Saving Private Ryan”.

None of our guys would have made a suicidal, do-or-die stand to “hold the bridge”. Everybody in the ETO knew how fast our combat engineers could put up bridges, and would have has no hesitation to blow a bridge as soon as the Germans came within sight. At which point, they would have taken up defensive positions to keep infantry or German engineers away from the water, or would have pulled back even farther and just called in artillery or an airstrike or two.

I would commend to you books on WW2 by Antony Beevor - his tomes on various aspects of the war - from Russian / German and Allied perspectives are insightful. All very good reads - the ones I have checked out from the local library so far.
I am currently working on a book by him about the Fall of Berlin 1945. Very good read especially on the ground historic research about the last days of the the Nazi Reich and their retreat from the Baltics, the Russian Front etc.

I’ve read Beevor’s books on Stalingrad and the Battle of Berlin, but by far his best book, in my opinion, is the one on the Spanish Civil War. While there are a lot of differences between the United States and 1930s Spain, I’ve occasionally speculated that this country might have that kind of explosively violent bloodletting, because so many citizens are well-armed.

I’m also a big fan of Max Hastings’ work.

There it is. The fact that you think that it’s acceptable to take 90% of marginal income says enough.

You also don’t seem to factor in all the deductions available under Eisenhower, which made the effective tax rate MUCH lower.

Look at Page 12 of this PDF:

http://eml.berkeley.edu/~saez/piketty-saezJEP07taxprog.pdf

It seems like the effective tax rate for the top 0.01% is similar today to that in 1960.

What about the bottom 20% under Eisenhower? They paid A LOT more in 1960 than they do today. If Eisenhower’s tax policy was so great, why don’t we take all of it?

Piketty and Saez attribute the greater progressivity under 1960 tax law to higher corporate taxes and higher estate taxes. Income taxes on an effective basis are very close.

You do understand that all those deductions bred all sorts of goofy tax dodges, don’t you? Deductions distort markets (getting to deduct all kinds of interest, etc.).

“90% top marginal tax rates as in Eisenhower’s day would solve a lot of the above type problems.”

If the 90% top marginal rate didn’t equate to much of a difference in effective tax rate, how would it solve all the inequality problems?

“The 90% tax rate of Eisenhower’s 1959 was for income over $150,000 in 1959 dollars filing single and 300K filing married. That would equate to an income in the millions in 2015 dollars.. Why do you lie? Or are you dumb?”

$150k in 1960 is $1.2MM today. Not millions.

So we understand your position. It’s OK to take 90% of people’s marginal earnings once they are earning over 1.2MM as an individual or 2.4MM as a couple per year–even with lots of deductions.

Thanks for clarifying.

That depends if it’s going up or down. :-)

It looks to me that if gold breaks above $1,060 it will have broken above another teacup and handle formation for the 4th or 5th time in 8 years.

Every other time it has done that in this time frame gold has risen further. It also looks like gold is in phase 2 of a bull market and phase 3 is where fortunes are made and lost.

House Democrats Introduce Bill to Ban Manufacture of ‘Assault Weapons’
breitbart.com | 12/15/2015 | AWR Hawkins

On December 16, Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) will introduce the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2015″ to ban all manufacturing of “assault weapons.”

Besides banning the manufacturing of AR-15s and related firearms, the ban would put in place “new restrictions on the sale of already existing assault weapons.”

According to The Hill, Cicilline said, “Assault weapons are designed for the sole purpose of killing as many people as quickly as possible. We need to do everything we can to reduce the toll of gun violence by keeping these weapons out of our communities.”

Donald Trump Details Plan To Close ‘Areas’ Of The Internet

by Aviva Shen Dec 15, 2015 10:02 pm

Presidential frontrunner Donald Trump followed up on his promise to close parts of the internet in order to fight ISIS radicalization, offering his most specific idea yet in the GOP debate Tuesday night.

When explicitly asked if he would take similar steps as repressive governments in China and North Korea to censor the internet, Trump said he would seal off the internet from places at war with America, since the internet was “our idea.”

“I don’t want them using our internet to take our young impressionable youth,” Trump explained.

“So, are you open to closing parts of the internet?” CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked.

“I would certainly be open to closing areas where we are at war with somebody,” Trump said. “I sure as hell don’t want to let people that want to kill us and kill our nation use our internet. Yes, sir. I am.”

Trump also said he would recruit “our good people” in Silicon Valley to “penetrate the internet” to “find out exactly where ISIS is and everything about ISIS.”

Rand Paul: Donald Trump’s plan to close the Internet is against the Constitution
By Eugene Scott, CNN
Updated 12:48 PM ET, Wed December 16, 2015 | CNN

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump either does not understand or does not have much respect for the Constitution, Rand Paul said Wednesday.

Trump, the Republican front-runner, said he “would certainly be open to closing [the Internet] in areas where we are at war with somebody” at the CNN Republican debate Tuesday. The billionaire businessman was referencing shutting off parts of the Internet that helped incite or facilitate terrorism.

But Paul said following Trump’s strategy was fundamentally against the Constitution.

“If you’re going to close the Internet — that’s like something they do in North Korea, something like they do in China — but it also goes against the Constitution. It goes against the First Amendment,” he said on “America’s Newsroom” on Fox News.

“Closing the Internet would require a change to our Constitution where we get rid of the First Amendment. That’s a big step,” he said.

Paul dismissed Trump’s current standing in the 2016 horse race, saying that the polls could change in a matter of weeks.

“The polls are very fluid. Ben Carson, who I like a lot, has dropped 20 points,” the Kentucky Senator said. “Same thing could happen to Trump.”

Paul painted to one of Trump’s positions on terrorists as being potential popularity shifters.

“He’s talking about killing women and children — the families of terrorists,” he said. “I don’t think many Americans want to kill two-year-old children or four-year-old children.”

Oil Prices Fall Further as Inventories Rise to Record
Price difference between U.S. oil and global benchmark narrows after Congress agrees to lift export ban
By Nicole Friedman
Updated Dec. 16, 2015 4:04 p.m. ET

NEW YORK—Oil prices fell to new multiyear lows Wednesday as U.S. commercial crude and refined-product inventories rose to a record.

U.S. oil has fallen 15% this month on concerns that the global glut of crude is set to persist into 2016 and possibly beyond. Production remains high around the world, as companies pump at full tilt to maximize revenues despite low prices.

Light, sweet crude for January delivery fell $1.83, or 4.9%, to $35.52 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest settlement since February 2009. Brent, the global benchmark, fell $1.26, or 3.3%, to $37.19 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe, the lowest level since December 2008.

Both benchmarks are down more than 30% this year.

Weekly inventory data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed an increase of 4.8 million barrels of crude oil stocks. Analysts polled by The Wall Street Journal expected the agency to report that crude-oil inventories fell 1.4 million barrels last week. The U.S. imported 8.3 million barrels a day of crude, the highest weekly level since September 2013. Imports have risen in recent months because the U.S. production has declined and the U.S. has more storage space available for crude oil than other regions.

“The U.S. market is actually vacuuming up part of the global supply-demand surplus,” said Tim Evans, analyst at Citigroup Inc. Supplies of gasoline and distillates, including heating oil and diesel fuel, also rose. Total crude and refined-product commercial stockpiles climbed by 5 million barrels to 1.31 billion barrels, a record in EIA data going back to 1990.

Security Dies Where Multiculturalism Thrives
Townhall.com | December 16, 2015 | Ben Shapiro

While Americans fret over Donald Trump’s plans to ban Muslim immigration to the United States temporarily thanks to the government’s inability to keep us safe, the government continues to prove its inability to keep us safe. This week, we found out that President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security prohibited agents from screening foreign citizens applying for visas to enter the country.

According to former acting undersecretary at DHS for intelligence and analysis John Cohen, “During that time period immigration officials were not allowed to use or review social media as part of the screening process. … The primary concern was that it would be viewed negatively if it was disclosed publicly and there were concerns that it would be embarrassing.”

He continued, “It was primarily a question of optics. There were concerns from a privacy and civil liberties perspective that while this was not illegal, that it would be viewed negatively if it was disclosed publicly.”

So 14 Americans in San Bernardino died for optics.

This is the essence of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism suggests that all cultures are equal, that they carry equal values, that they pose equal threats to public safety. Extending that logic, we must treat suspects from all cultures with equal care. But what if not all cultures provide an equal threat? What if the people who engage in some cultures are more likely than others to participate in terrorism? Then, in order to maintain the multicultural fiction, we must bend over backwards not to check out threats from such cultures. Either that, or we must violate everyone’s civil rights equally.

Or at least they did. Across Europe, the reality of multiculturalism is hitting home. German chancellor Angela Merkel, who was recently named Time’s Person of the Year for taking in one million Syrian refugees, said, “Multiculturalism leads to parallel societies and therefore remains a ‘life lie’ … We want and we will reduce the number of refugees noticeably.” She was forced to denounce her own former viewpoint thanks to the fallout from her decisions: Refugee camps have turned into hotbeds of rape and child abuse. Mass Muslim immigration into Europe has heightened such challenges for years, of course, but the left and the press have suppressed such information.

TED CRUZ on immigration policy: “What you do is you enforce the law… That means you stop the Obama administration’s policy of releasing criminal illegal aliens. Do you know how many aliens Bill Clinton deported? 12 million. Do you know how many illegal aliens, George W. Bush deported? 10 million.”

THE FACTS: Cruz vastly overstates the deportation numbers for both presidents. Statistics from Immigration and Customs Enforcement show that roughly 1.6 million were deported under Bush. Under Clinton, when the old Immigration and Naturalization Service oversaw deportations, the figure was about 870,000, according to the Migration Policy Institute. So far, about 2.4 million have been deported under the Obama administration.

Clinton and Allies Gleeful as Trump Dominates GOP Race

While Republicans gather in Las Vegas on Tuesday, their likely Democratic opponent will be keeping a cool eye on them from a Minneapolis party in her honor hosted by the liberal librarians’ Rush Limbaugh, Prairie Home Companion radio host Garrison Keillor. That soirée is but one of a half-dozen celebrity-studded events on the Clinton cash-raking calendar this week, including tomorrow night’s $27,000 per head Omaha fundraiser with Warren “Tax Me More” Buffett and Thursday’s party in New York with Drew Barrymore and other glitterati.

Awash in cash, swanning among swells and buoyed by the spectacle of Trumpian excesses, the Clinton camp relishes the prospect of the fifth GOP debate as a bonanza of earned media, with its potential to further alarm and energize moderates and the Democratic base, while making Clinton look calm and steady in comparison.

Clinton supporter David Brock runs two pro-Hillary PACs, American Bridge and Correct the Record. He called tonight’s show in Vegas an opportunity. “There is nothing like a GOP debate to clarify for the American people how anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-science, anti-gay and anti-women these candidates and their party truly is.
