BEIJING — A collapse in China’s ailing stock market spread like contagion across the globe again Thursday, pummeling nervous investors looking for respite from the week’s rocky trading.
Chinese stocks traded for less than 30 minutes, slumping 7 percent and triggering the second emergency market closure this week. The action prompted markets in Europe to retreat and then spread to the United States, where stocks tumbled 2 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average, which tracks 30 blue-chip stocks, and the Standard & Poor’s 500, a broader measure of the market, both fell about 2.3 percent. They have lost about 5 percent of their value the week so far.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq suffered the deepest losses, falling 3 percent on Thursday. It is down about 6 percent this week and on pace to enter a what’s known as a correction, meaning the index will have fallen about 10 percent from its most recent high.
The sell-off was widespread, even hitting tech giants Apple and Amazon, which were down 4 percent and 3.7 percent respectively. JPMorgan Chase slid 4 percent, while Nordstrom tumbled 5.5 percent.

They tried mightily to pump up the market from 11:00 a.m. on. Had they not intervened, the drop in the DOW would’ve been more like 800-900 points.

The 29 minutes that shook the world began on Thursday, January 7 at 9.30am Chinese local time when markets opened. At 9.42am, a sharp fall on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges triggered a controversial new “circuit breaker” that halts trading for 15 minutes after a 5 per cent decline and closes the markets for the day after the blue-chip CSI 300 index is off 7 per cent.
When trading resumed at 9.57am, investors panicked. It took just another two minutes for the CSI 300 to set off the second circuit-breaker, ending the day’s session before, as Chinese investors joked, their “coffees had even cooled”.
At the same time, the renminbi was setting a freefall record of its own by declining 1 per cent against the dollar in just 10 minutes — a sharp move for the still carefully managed currency.

Investors’ fears are real.
Mark Twain is attributed with saying that history may not repeat itself, but it certainly does rhyme. What we are seeing this week in terms of the Chinese stock market sell-off is similar to what we saw last year, except the one big difference for US investors is that the Fed may not be as worried about the volatility – unlike what we saw in September, when geopolitical turmoil and resulting volatility helped postpone the Fed’s rate hike.
In a speech on Monday, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester was clear that a China slowdown is not viewed as a significant risk to the Fed’s economic outlook for the US, as it’s already been built into the outlook. And on the same day, San Francisco Fed President John Williams said that a stock market sell-off won’t impact the Fed’s decision making.
In the year ahead, China’s stock market is in for many more bad days. But while there is cause for caution, that shouldn’t translate into a cause for panic. The bigger takeaway for U.S. investors is that China is one of many issues that will likely create more volatility for equity investors in 2016, driven by factors such as Britain potentially leaving the Euro in June and heightened tensions in the Middle East and Asia. US investors will need to learn to become accustomed to China’s volatile market. What might help is a better understanding of what’s driving markets today.

For the second time in a week stocks have fallen on China’s stock exchanges, causing an emergency shutdown and intensifying concerns about the health of the world’s second largest economy.
Trading was frozen on both the Shanghai and the Shenzhen stock exchanges on Monday and Thursday after stocks plunged by more than 7 percent.
The drop, which is being linked to poor economic figures, tensions after North Korea’s nuclear test and the spat between the Arab world and Iran, comes amid further data showing that China’s economy is slowing down.
But what is heightening fears is that markets have continued to fall despite government intervention.

Independent analyses by both the University of California San Diego macroeconomist James Hamilton and the Bank of England have fingered weak demand as the chief cause of low oil prices. Given that China is the driver of incremental demand for most commodities, weak prices must therefore be principally attributed to weakness in the Chinese economy.
But what sort of weakness is this? The thinking splits two ways. Many analysts anticipate a gradual slowdown in China’s underlying growth rate as it migrates from an investment-led to a consumer-led economy. By this view, China is facing a structural re-alignment, with the shift requiring another two to four years. Things are slowing down, but it’s nothing serious.
A darker view sees a credit bubble emanating from years of misguided over-investment in China’s infrastructure, housing and manufacturing. China has created an unsustainable credit bubble, and this will come crashing down, taking the Chinese—and by implication, East Asian—economy with it. This view does not deny the need to restructure the Chinese economy, but anticipates a cyclical downturn, a financial crisis along the lines of 1998. The Chinese economy will not see a “soft landing,” but rather a full-blown crash.

Dry bulk shipping record low a warning flag for global economy
* Dry bulk shipping sector in one of worst ever downturns
* BDI index slump mirroring other commodities indicators

LONDON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - A slump in dry bulk shipping is set to worsen as the meltdown in global commodities and too many ships free for hire rock the sector used by investors to gauge the health of world trade.
Slower coal and iron ore demand from China - the world’s biggest industrial importer - have battered the dry bulk sector, already in the midst of its worst ever downturns that is expected to extend well into next year.
This week the Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index , which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities and seen by investors as a forward-looking indicator of global industrial activity, plunged to an all-time low.
A slump in oil and other commodity prices, due to slowing Chinese demand, has widely been seen as one of the reasons for U.S. Federal Reserve hesitancy in tightening policy.
“Dry bulk demand is very much dependent on the world economy,” said Symeon Pariaros, chief administrative officer of Athens-run and New York-listed shipping firm Euroseas.
“The slowdown in the world economy has caused both dry bulk and container shipping to suffer a lot lately. Euroseas, having exposure in both these sectors, is facing the consequences of this very low rate environment.”
The Baltic’s BDI index, which gauges the cost of shipping resources including iron ore, cement, grain, coal and fertiliser, has dropped to 498 points and is over 95 percent down from its all-time high of 11,793 points in 2008 before the financial crisis first hurt the sector.
“Demand slowing down and (ship) supply continuing to increase are the reasons why we will see the BDI likely hit figures in the 400 point level, which would be absolutely uncharted territory for the market,” said Khalid Hashim, managing director of Precious Shipping, one of Thailand’s largest dry cargo owners.

Worries over China and the health of the world economy have also pushed the 19-commodity Thomson Reuters/Core Commodity CRB Index to near 13-year lows in recent days, mirroring in part some of the pain felt by dry freight players.
“You can’t ignore the role of sentiment in the markets. Right now dry cargo shipowners’ heads are down and they are taking a daily battering at these earnings levels,” said Tony Foster, chief executive of British shipping asset manager Marine Capital.
“The market is clearly very weak in the short-term and 2016 is going to be very difficult.”

Global markets took a steep dive this week after China announced that it was depreciating its currency in an effort to boost its economy, which has been slowing recently. This sign of weakness sent Chinese and global stock markets sharply lower.
Many commodities markets dropped on fears that the world’s largest commodity buyer was in trouble. One of the hardest hit markets was copper, which fell to a seven year low at $1.99 per pound. Meanwhile, U.S. agricultural products came under pressure as well, especially corn, which China uses to feed its pigs and poultry.
Crude can’t stop slipping
Crude oil prices dropped near $32 per barrel this week, the lowest price in almost a dozen years. Prices are continuing to feel pressure from record-high supplies, and Chinese economic concerns added to dismal outlooks for global oil demand in the coming months.

I used to ski around south Lake Tahoe 30-yrs ago, and families were typically there usually Mon-Thu. The Fri-Sat crowd faced higher hotel rates and were your better skiers. I’m sure that flat middle-class wages haven’t helped the ski industry.

Same here. I wrote in Ron Paul in 2008 and 2012, not that it did any good. Big Labor’s battle against the One Percent does not appear to include 10 union officials who are better paid than the average American CEO, according to a new study released Wednesday.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 464 President John T. Niccollai was the highest paid union official in 2014, according to federal labor filings. He earned about $575,000 for representing 16,000 grocery store workers in New Jersey. Those workers pay the union nearly $500 in annual dues and anywhere from $50 to $150 for initiation fees.
The $3.4 million the union spent on salaries alone is nearly $500,000 more than it spent on representational activities on the year.
Nine other union presidents received pay packages in excess of $370,000. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten rounded out the top-10 list with a salary of $375,174, according to that union’s most recent report.
Rick Berman, executive director of the Center for Union Facts, said the high salaries demonstrate the hypocrisy of union leaders who make a living condemning business owners.
“If Big Labor is interested in turning a skeptical eye on executive pay, it should start with the one-percenters in its own ranks. Dues payments from middle-class employees are funding six-figure pay packages for hundreds of union presidents,” Berman said.
Patrick Semmens, spokesman for the National Right to Work Committee, said there is one key difference between CEOs and union officers. Company officials derive their incomes from business performance, but union organizers receive theirs from the paychecks of workers.
“The real scandal here is that union bosses fund their often lavish salaries with dues and fees taken from workers who would be fired for refusing to pay,” he said.
“Union officials should work for the rank-and-file workers, but with forced union dues employees instead end up working for the benefit of union officials.”

The father of one of the men killed in the 2012 Benghazi attacks has dared Hillary Clinton to a lie detector test.
Charles Woods, father to former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, said Wednesday that the then-secretary of state told him that a YouTube video was the cause of the attacks, but now denies it.
“I would love to sit down with Hillary Clinton, if she’d agree to do it as well, you know at the same table, by the same operator and have a lie detector test,” Woods told One America News Network.
Woods, a retired administration law judge, said he felt compelled to speak out after seeing Clinton’s interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos where she offered a different story.
The three other families who lost a loved one in the attack have also confirmed Woods’ story.
Clinton’s campaign team has not responded.

Lenny took it upon himself to contact me, at first through Facebook messaging and then through multiple phone calls. As people show up on the Sandy Hook Hoax Facebook Page for the first time spewing forth hatred and disgust that we could be so “disrespectful to the families” and “wishing something like this happens to you”, I would encourage everyone to dig a little deeper. The reason most of the new people are here is because they have heard that Dr James Tracy has been fired due to his attack against the poor grieving family.

Dr Tracy was issued a DMCA copyright complaint against an image of Noah Pozner that was used on his blog. It was the same image that had been used repeatedly by major news networks throughout the world after Sandy Hook and then again after a school shooting in PAKISTAN !
Dr Tracy then agreed, as a courtesy, to remove the image, but also filed a counterclaim asking for proof of copyright ownership, proof that he is indeed the father (remember- “Lenny” is an alias ! His real name is still a mystery. He goes by Lenny, Leonard, Eliezer, Len P Osner, and he told me that his given name is Leonid!) and a dated, time stamped copy of the original image.
Lenny was incapable of providing such things and so, after 30 days, the DMCA complaint expired. Tracy could have legally re-posted the image to his blog, but he didn’t. Instead, Lenny decided to attack Tracy through the media. His termination, despite all of the media hype, is for a technicality that has nothing to do with his views on Sandy Hook.
If the Pozners feel as though they have been harassed, why is it that they have brought no legal action against these supposed provocateurs ?
