Gasoline is dropping again in my neck of the woods. Seeing regular for around $1.65. Is $1 gas on the horizon? Or will we see prices go up as spring rolls in, regardless of falling crude prices?

Comment by oxide

Dipping to the $1.95 mark around here.

IMO prices will depend on

1. how long the frackers can hold out operations while selling below cost.

2. how long the House of Saud can hold out operating the country with their revenues staying below cost.

3. when viable storage physically runs out. Even at low prices, demand doesn’t seem to be rising to meet the supply. And if there’s nowhere for the excess supply to go, producers will have no choice but to leave the crude in the ground.

The problem is that Sauds count on a high profit per bbl to subsidize the country. At $6, (which we know is BS anyway) $24 bbl profit isn’t enough. Even if oil were free, $30 profit/ bbl isn’t enough.

Saudi Arabia Cuts Subsidies As Budget Deficit Soars

By Andy Tully
Posted on Wed, 30 December 2015 21:59

The price of crude oil has dropped so low that Saudi Arabia is facing a growing budget deficit, prompting the rich oil kingdom to make sharp cuts in its budget, levy new taxes and reduce government subsidies for water, electrical power and even gasoline.

This is an abrupt change in the country, OPEC’s largest oil producer, which has used its vast oil revenues to prop up the national economy to serve a population of about 30 million people. But even Saudi Arabia can’t sustain such practices when it runs a $98 billion deficit this year – about 15 percent of its gross domestic product.

Investors face a “cataclysmic year” where stock markets could fall by up to 20% and oil could slump to $16 (£11) a barrel, economists at the Royal Bank of Scotland have warned.

In a note to its clients the bank said: “Sell everything except high quality bonds. This is about return of capital, not return on capital. In a crowded hall, exit doors are small.” It said the current situation was reminiscent of 2008, when the collapse of the Lehman Brothers investment bank led to the global financial crisis. This time China could be the crisis point.

The Chinese authorities have resorted to “nuclear strength” weapons to deter an attack on the yuan by short sellers and convince sceptical investors that they are in control of the country’s spluttering financial system.

China’s central bank fixed the currency firmer again on Tuesday but traders were not persuaded and the currency slipped in early trade despite what dealers called aggressive intervention to support the currency.

The gap between the mainland yuan and its offshore counterpart had grown in recent days but suspected intervention by China’s state-owned banks brought them almost into line on Tuesday.

The action sent the rate at which banks charge each other to borrow yuan in Hong Kong to a record high of 67% on Tuesday.

From the GRLD website …

“Inspiration happens when you least expect it! What started as a fun, weekend activity to enter our Cheesy Mac and Rib Melt into LA’s 7th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational quickly became the idea behind The Grilled Cheese Truck. After seeing the masses of grilled cheese fanatics gathered to pay homage to our favorite childhood (and adult!) comfort food, we realized that this world needed more grilled cheese sandwiches brought to the streets. Not just the classic bread, butter and cheese, but amazing creations that are constructed with the best ingredients, local produce and made with nothing but love.

Company Information

The Grilled Cheese Truck, Inc. (OTCQB: GRLD)

The Grilled Cheese Truck, Inc. is an American entrepreneurial “emerging growth” company with a brand and menu that is widely followed throughout the nation. We believe that gourmet grilled cheese is the “new pizza”. Americans have grown up with this “culinary common denominator”, and the grilled cheese sandwich is the epitome of comfort food. Management believes that we are one of the most followed gourmet food trucks on Facebook, and we believe we are the only known gourmet food truck verified by Twitter.

Many quality ingredients go into every sandwich we make which is what we believe elevates our sandwiches above the rest and why people line up in front of our trucks sometimes for over an hour to get one of our delicious creations, whether it’s a Plain and Simple Melt or The Cheesy Mac and Rib fully loaded. Our goal is to make people happy with our food.

Our grilled cheese sandwiches have received numerous accolades, including being listed as one of the best sandwiches in the country.

These types of “big data” systems are more likely to be used to perform post-offense diagnostics (to catch the perps or determine what other freedoms to further curb) then they would be used to restrict the average non-offender.

“Law Enforcement” has devolved into the same business model that Big Medicine is stuck in: treat the symptoms, pour money into diagnostics and forget about prevention because that takes hard work and discipline on the part of the patient.

RBS cries ’sell everything’ as deflationary crisis nears

RBS has advised clients to brace for a cataclysmic year and a global deflationary crisis, warning that major stock markets could fall by a fifth and oil may plummet to $16 a barrel.

The bank’s credit team said markets are flashing stress alerts akin to the turbulent months before the Lehman crisis in 2008. Sell everything except high quality bonds. This is about return of capital, not return on capital. In a crowded hall, exit doors are small, it said in a client note.

“Warning that major stock markets could fall by a fifth.”

Cripes. What crisis?

The S&P 500 would have to fall by half to get the dividend yield up to its historic average — with no dividend cuts.

Even if you assume that investors have to settle for less in a low-inflation environment, a decrease of one-third is required just to get back to sanity.

It’s 20 points more down just to get back to where it was when I sold the last in the retirement account just because of how overvalued stocks were.

Everything You Need To Know About Socialism in 20 Quotes
Townhall.com | Jan 12, 2016 | John Hawkins

1) “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” — Margaret Thatcher

4) “We are socialists, we are enemies of today’s capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions.” — Adolf Hitler

8) “When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.” — Frederic Bastiat

9) “Socialism states that you owe me something simply because I exist. Capitalism, by contrast, results in a sort of reality-forced altruism: I may not want to help you, I may dislike you, but if I don’t give you a product or service you want, I will starve. Voluntary exchange is more moral than forced redistribution.” — Ben Shapiro

11) “In 1989, for two hours’ labor at the minimum wage, an American worker could obtain, at a corner Sizzler, a feast more opulent, more nutritionally rich and gastronomically diverse than anything available to almost all the citizens of the socialist world (including the elite) at almost any price.” — David Horowitz

18) “The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement. They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty. They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent. They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office. Every man but one a subordinate clerk in a bureau.” — Ludwig von Mises

Is this any different from “lol@lola” or calling posters pineapples or other ad hominem attacks which seem to be tolerated, if not outright encouraged in this blog?

My point about older people’s name calling “socialism” losing it’s power (becoming a yawner) was a pretty clear line of thought, and supported by actual observations. It wasn’t just stupid name calling. That’s a big difference.

1. Most people nowadays scared about “socialism” and who use the label are older angry white men.

“’When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.’ — Frederic Bastiat”

Or they create a persuasion system that entices peasants to remain peasants by convincing huge masses of totally dumbed-down peasants to voluntarily committing themselves to sending up the economic food chain huge portions of their paychecks each and every month for extended periods of time that may very well run into several decades.

A major tool utilized by this persuasion system is the term “wealth building”, a term that contains much truth and a few falsehoods - one falsehood being the direction of which this wealth building takes place, which generally is not at the source where the commitment by the dumbed-down peasant was made but instead is located somewhere near the top of the economic food chain.

Comment by Mr. Banker
2016-01-12 12:27:12

A factor that makes this persuasion system so easy and wonderful for those positioned near the top of the economic food chain is the enormous number of sufficiently dumbed-down peasants who are willing - eager! - to borrow their way into these “wealth building” situations.

Such are their numbers and such is their eagerness that their appears to be no limit to the prices these dumbed-down peasants are willing to pay in order to “build wealth”, prices that they themselves ARE WILLING to pay but prices that they themselves CANNOT PAY.

Bahahahahaha … but not to worry, there is a method, a process, that enables these dumbed-down peasants to pay (and pay and pay and pay) and this method and process involves the insertion of a money man - a lender - in the midst of these wealth building transactions. This lender - this Miracle Man - allows the impossible to be made possible, the unaffordable to become affordable. All it takes is a few signatures placed above a few dotted lines and - presto! - the deed is done and the wealth building begins.

Comment by Mr. Banker

Bahahahahahaha … as a example to illustrate just how dumbed-down the Amercian population has become check out what Wikipedia has to say about this fictional lender:

“George Bailey is a fictional character and the protagonist in Frank Capra’s 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life. He occupies slot #9 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 50 greatest screen heroes (in its 2003 list entitled AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Heroes and Villains). He is played by James Stewart as an adult and Bobby Anderson as a child. He is loosely based on George Pratt, a character in Philip Van Doren Stern’s The Greatest Gift.”

Bahahaha … the ninth greatest screen hero is a lender!

Bahahahahaha … dumb ‘em down, and profit.

Today, he would just donate money to the obama administration, the AG would declare he is too big to fail/prosecute and he would instead get a huge bailout.

Really? You must have been a bad student.

Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere culminating in a period of extensive glaciation. This hypothesis had little support in the scientific community, but gained temporary popular attention due to a combination of a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s and press reports that did not accurately reflect the full scope of the scientific climate literature

While the remaining German children in German schools are told to embrace multiculturalism, migrants in schools don’t even know what the word “integration” means. When asked by a teacher about what they think of the Germans, they reply that they think they’re “disgusting pork eaters” and outsiders. Not a single one of them has German friends. They ridicule a student for implying he has a German friend.

Greenfield: Why Feminism Failed Calogne’s Women
FrontPage | January 12, 2016 | Daniel Greenfield

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. Big Feminism, fresh from fighting pitched battles against swimsuit posters in European subways and other phantoms of “rape culture”, failed the women who were attacked by violent Muslim migrant mobs in Cologne, Berlin and Hamburg who were the products of an actual rape culture dating back to Mohammed’s injunction to his men that Muslim women must wear burqas to avoid being “molested” while non-Muslim women captured in the House of War could be raped by Muslim Jihadis at will.

The hundreds of women who were attacked in a single day by Muslim mobs are inconvenient victims. Like the Peace Corps workers abused by the locals or female activist raped by the Palestinian Muslims they came to help, their stories don’t fit the intersectional paradigm and have to be covered up in a politically correct burka.

Big Feminism joined with the left in crying for the migration of a horde of young Muslim men from a culture where sexual assault and harassment are ubiquitous to the cities of Europe. Feminism forcibly introduced the women of Europe to their rapists and then left the grinning mobs to get on with their work. Now it complains that the women it victimized are a distraction from the much more important conversations it would like to have about convincing everyone to fight rape culture by buying forty dollar “I Am a Feminist” t shirts.

Underneath feminism is the rotten leftist creed that all evils originate with the West. It is as impossible for a mainstream feminist in good standing with the political sisterhood to acknowledge what truly happened in Cologne and commiserate with the victims as it was for a Communist to admit that there was no food because a centralized bureaucracy of senile Socialist civil servants is not the best way to run an economy. They cannot even truly admit the crime until they have redirected the blame to that old standby boogeyman on which all Muslim atrocities since the Gates of Vienna have been blamed; failure to integrate due to European intolerance.

Gay, feminist and liberal Jewish and Christian groups worked overtime to fill their countries with the demographic most likely to commit hate crimes against them. Like Big Feminism, these other arms of the left sold out the groups they claimed to represent for the larger agenda of the left.

The left does not help women. The left only helps the left. Beneath the slick advertising, the artsy designs that lend the illusion of the personal to the impersonal and the touching video narratives is the soul of an ideological machine whose acolytes are trained to allocate empathy in tune with a rigid set of rules that are as inflexible as any Soviet commissar’s handbook.

Big Feminism, along with the rest of its leftist partners, created the conditions that led to the Muslim attacks on women on New Year’s Eve. And feminists are leading the cover up of the crisis they caused and continue to worsen by advocating for even more refugee admissions.

CBS’ Nancy Drew Will Be Diverse

January 12, 2016 9:48am PT by Lesley Goldberg

CBS’ new Nancy Drew will look very different should the network move forward with the reboot.

CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller revealed Tuesday that the network’s reimagining of the iconic character will be diverse.

“She is diverse, that is the way she is written,” the executive told THR immediately following his time in front of the press at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour Tuesday. While Geller said it was too early in the process to explain just what he meant by diverse — whether Nancy is African-American, Asian-American or Latino, he said it would hinge on finding the right actress for the part. “[She will] not [be] Caucasian,” he stressed. “I’d be open to any ethnicity.”

on the other hand….

All in all, things are looking good for the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President and CEO John Williams said in Santa Barbara the morning of Jan. 8.
Despite China’s market uncertainty and the global volatility, Williams doesn’t expect that to have a major impact on the U.S. economy. He pointed to positive job growth, close to full employment and consumer spending increasing at a solid pace, especially in regard to auto sales.
“The market turmoil or volatility is not something that directly affects my outlook right now,” he said during a California Bankers Association event at the Four Seasons Biltmore. “To be honest, what’s happening with global commodity prices and the dollar have a bigger effect on the U.S. economy than the Chinese stock market.”
The Fed’s decision to slightly bump interest rates in December was the right move, Williams said, and will allow the U.S. central bank to keep future hikes gradual.
The Federal Reserve is helping the economy slowly adjust to higher interest rates than it has seen in seven years. While the balance sheet has swelled to more than $4.5 trillion, officials will likely take five or six years to reduce it to a more normal size, Williams said.
“Our plan is to shrink the balance sheet ‘organically,’ if you will, through the maturation of assets,” Williams wrote in prepared remarks. “It’s likely going to take at least six years to get the balance sheet back to normal, which is in keeping with the overall approach to removing accommodation gradually.” “Normal” translates to around $1.5 trillion, he said.
While Williams expects the unemployment rate to decline to around 4.5 percent by mid-year, he was less optimistic about the labor force population rate, which he said was unlikely to rebound to a more normal level. He cited the aging population, the increase in single-income families and the younger demographic working less. Marginal workers have decreased by 20 percent in the past year alone, Williams said.
“Their reentry rate back into the labor force has actually fallen,” he wrote. “When you combine this with the aging workforce, it looks unlikely that participation will rise.”
While inflation is too low at 0.5 percent and below the Fed’s 2 percent target, it should increase as the economy strengthens, Williams said. He expected it to be near the target by the end of next year.
“Looking ahead, as the effects of the dollar and oil prices ebb and the economy strengthens further, I see inflation moving back up and expect that we’ll be at or near our 2 percent target by the end of next year,” Williams wrote.

Too easy for some not to click the link.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi released a statement blaming most of the violence on “chronic gang conflicts.”

“Every year Chicago Police recover more illegal guns than officers in any other city, and as more and more illegal guns continue to find their way into our neighborhoods.”

So the problem is smuggling of illegal guns, got it. What is the proposed solution?

“So it is clear we need stronger state and federal gun laws,” Guglielmi said in the statement.

Because those who illegally procure guns will follow gun purchasing laws, and the only thing preventing them from doing so is not enough laws? One can almost see why Chicago’s gun problem is getting worse by the day.

The statement continues:

“So far this year, the majority of the gun violence we’ve seen are a result of chronic gang conflicts driven in part by social media commentary and petty disputes among rival factions. Despite an overall lack of cooperation from gang members, detectives are working aggressively and making optimistic progress in several cases.”

At least 2,986 people were shot in Chicago in 2015. Many more will be shot - by illegally obtained weapons in a city with unprecedented gun control - in 2016.

A recent public posting on a “conspiracy theory” forum — conspiracy websites are typically the most heavily targeted by government officials — admits that individuals are constantly being recruited and hired by shadowy groups and government-affiliated agencies to manipulate online discussions.

“Shills exist,” writes this anonymous ex-shill following a lengthy explanation of how he was hand-selected to pose as a normal commenter and basically lie on forums and in comment sections. “They are real. They walk among you … You should be aware of this,” he adds.

Crazy, fiscally conservative liberals!

The Legislative Analyst’s Office on Monday gave a favorable review of Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed 2016-17 budget, particularly approving of his plan to dramatically boost the state’s reserves.
The governor would double the size of budget reserves to $10 billion, placing $2 billion into the state rainy day fund in addition to the $2.6 billion that the law requires be deposited over the next two years.

What’s preferable - a dictatorship with tears or a dictatorship without tears?

Yet as Barack Obama’s tenure in the White House shows, no matter how much hope and change were promised, what we’ve ended up with is not only more of the same, but something worse: an invasive, authoritarian surveillance state armed and ready to eliminate any opposition.

The state of our nation under Obama has become more bureaucratic, more debt-ridden, more violent, more militarized, more fascist, more lawless, more invasive, more corrupt, more untrustworthy, more mired in war, and more unresponsive to the wishes and needs of the electorate. Most of all, the government, already diabolical and manipulative to the nth degree, has mastered the art of “do what I say and not what I do” hypocrisy.
