Those who have benefited from good timing should thanks their lucky stars rather than boast how brilliant they are.

Very few currently aged 30 or 40 will ever have that kind of luck ( ie. “good timing”). And guess what? There are plenty of them that are smarter than you.

Fog a mirror and get a house?

How about fog a mirror and see your stocks quadruple over
15 years? How about fog a mirror and see the sale price of your houses triple over 20 years?

Remember…… I can ask $50k for my used up 10 year old Chevy pickup but where is the buyer at that price?

So it is with any depreciating asset like a house.

“All over the southwest you’ve got these businessmen. They were
making money when everybody was making money. They think that means they’re smart. And now they’re hurting. When the price of oil fell, so did they. They’ve still got money, but they need more money. When the oil money was good, they put
up all these office buildings. Now they’re half empty. They’d give you anything to move in: first two months free, redecoration, whatever you want. They help you set up the store. I’m the roper. I go out and find them, and bring them in.”

That was interesting, thanks. Though to me, whether he’s a “master of psychology” or not is less at issue than whether he’s going to uphold the laws of this country and protect the interests of Americans broadly. If the author is right that he just wants to show that he can win, that could be a bad thing (if, say, his alleged “mastery of identity politics” will be enough for him); but if he wants to show that he can win by pursuing sound policies that are wildly popular, not starting wars, etc., it could be a good thing. We will probably find out in November.

I read another interesting piece at nakedcapitalism yesterday attempting to predict, at a fairly detailed level, the Clinton/DNC gameplan for Trump, with an assessment of its likely effectiveness. This is coming from the left, so the critique of staged anti-Trump rallies, identity politics fury, etc. adds something to the “that dog won’t hunt” picture. The comments are pretty good too:

Obama challenges Communist-led Cuba with call for democracy
HAVANA | By Matt Spetalnick, Jeff Mason and Frank Jack Daniel

U.S. President Barack Obama challenged Cuba’s Communist government with an impassioned call for democracy and economic reforms on Tuesday, addressing the Cuban people directly in a historic speech broadcast throughout the island.

Taking the stage at Havana’s Grand Theater with President Raul Castro in attendance, Obama said he was in Cuba to extend a hand of friendship and “bury the last remnant” of the Cold War in the Americas.

But he also pressed hard for economic and political reforms and greater openness in a one-party state where the government stifles dissent, Internet access is low and the media is in state hands.

His speech was the high point of a 48-hour trip made possible by his agreement with Castro in December 2014 to cast aside decades of hostility that began soon after Cuba’s 1959 revolution, and work to normalize relations.

Nonetheless, Obama threw down a very public gauntlet to Castro, saying Cubans cannot realize their full potential if his government does not allow change and relax its grip on Cuban politics and society.

“I believe citizens should be free to speak their minds without fear,” Obama told the audience on the final day of his visit. “Voters should be able to choose their governments in free and democratic elections.”

“Not everybody agrees with me on this, not everybody agrees with the American people on this but I believe those human rights are universal. I believe they’re the rights of the American people, the Cuban people and people around the world,” Obama said.

Today is the primary in Arizona and I’m not voting. You said yourself it doesn’t matter, why are you so worked up all the time? We aren’t deciding anything here.

Do I hope Trump beats Cruz? Yes. Do I hope anyone beats Clinton? Yes.

I was thinking this morning:

‘Television interview, “60 Minutes”, May 12, 1996: Lesley Stahl, speaking of US sanctions against Iraq: “We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And – and you know, is the price worth it?”

“Madeleine Albright: “I think this is a very hard choice, but the price – we think the price is worth it.”

Now remember how these half million children died. It was largely from a lack of medicine. Think about how excruciating their deaths were. And how it must have felt for their families to have known there was medicine out there that the Clinton bunch were denying them.

There’s over 300,000 dead in Syria. That’s more than 1,000 9/11’s. Clinton strikes again. I don’t think I have the option to vote against Trump. I’ve never seen that box on a ballot. So who do you suggest we vote for?

A close friend is a naturalized American Citizen, originally from Senegal.

She noted to me that the Libya situation is going to be far worse than Iraq. Libyans used to hire a huge number of guest workers at high wages. Once the regime fell, a LOT of young men, who used to be able to make a lot of money (and sent it back to their families) found themselves without a way to support their prior standard of living.

And so they are turning to crime in droves.

And another thing regarding HRC. The best explanation for the e-mail server is that she wanted to control the information on it in preparation for a presidential run.

So, she put US government information in an unsafe place for her own benefit.

If you’re a true open borders libertarian, you’d accept the challenge.

After all, what’s good for the country must also be good for Bill.

Bill,

Did you see my challenge to all HBB open borders advocates? Check out this past Friday’s bits bucket.

A true, honest open borders advocate would accept the challenge immediately. All it requires is that you keep the door of your domicile wide open 24/7 for an entire month, whether or not anyone is at home.

Dare to take the challenge? If so, you need to film it using numerous cameras inside and outside your domicile.

If not, you’re a hypocrite. That which should be accepted by others need not be accepted by you.

‘I was so right about Saint Ron’

The morning I first met Ron Paul, after greetings etc, we sat down for breakfast and I told him running as a Republican again was a mistake. I said he should run as a libertarian. He told me his rationale and I accepted it and volunteered. Over the next year and a half, he and I had spirited debates about things like the libertarian approach to development and endangered species, which was a big issue at the time in central Texas.

Mr Paul never had some saint like attitude about himself. I never got a feeling that it was his way or the highway; it was exactly the opposite. There were no litmus tests. Opinions and differences were welcomed and heartily argued.

Actually, ALL of the subway was shut down last Wednesday to conduct inspections on a particular type of cable box. There had been two instances of those types of cables failing in the past year, including one smoke fatality. The new manager decided on an immediate shutdown. They found some faulty cables and are conducting further inspections. I’m just glad they did it before the tourists arrived for the Cherry Blossom festival.

No conspiracy theories needed; there are enough problems on Metro without them. (although it wouldn’t surprise me if they did some security sweeps too.)

They got a new guy running things, and he shut it down for a day and made the employees inspect the electrical cabling. This is because a while ago a train got stuck, the power cables smoldered and some people got sick on the train (and a weak one died.)

Perhaps a display of power, but doing the right thing. The system hasn’t been maintained well and is failing often. From what I’ve read a ton of workers are union, and friends family and relatives, and are lazy check collectors so the system is a mess.

Why? Statistically people with high credit scores tend to have better driving records. I tend to drive like I borrow - well. And I have a very high credit score and an excellent driving record, and don’t think that’s a coincidence. Now, is very 800+ an excellent driver? No. Is every 550 a horrible driver? ARRRGH! From the Washington Post.
In the long-term, renters who can’t afford to become homeowners also postpone the ability to create wealth through housing, which could impact other financial decisions later in life. Housing doesn’t create wealth u nless your are building it. It can and historically has been a reasonable STORE of wealth, since you have to pay for a place to live anyway. But it doesn’t build wealth any more than any other form of consumption. Did people learn NOTHING from the RE bubble and crash?
This was from an otherwise reasonable piece on growing affordability issues for first time home buyers. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/03/22/why-it-seems-impossible-to-buy-your-first-home/

Not reality. You’d have to shell out another $1000 for the taxes, insurance and depreciation.

And on what planet are rents 50% higher than a mortgage payment?

That’s not building wealth because you are consuming it. The imputed rent is the biggest divedend of ownership, but it isn’t building wealth because unless you’re renting out rooms you consume all of it.

Comment by Jake
2016-03-22 16:24:54

Irrespective of self-consumption, the total carrying cost far exceeds the imputed rent at current prices and at anytime in the last 15 years. There is no way around this mathematical fact.

Obama: Brussels a Reminder the World Must Unite on Terror

In the wake of a series of deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels on Tuesday, the U.S. presidential front-runners clashed over interrogation techniques and whether to stop foreign Muslims from entering the country.

“If they could expand the laws, I would do a lot more than waterboarding,” Donald Trump said Tuesday morning on NBC’s Today. “I am in the camp where you have to get the information, and you have to get it rapidly.”

The Democratic presidential front-runner, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, slammed the idea later on the same program.

“Our country’s most experienced and bravest military leaders will tell you that torture is not effective,” said Clinton, a Democrat who served under President Obama. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies “don’t need to resort to torture but they are going to need more help.”

Hillary slams Trump for suggesting waterboarding:
Torture would be an ‘open recruitment poster for more terrorists’
By Nikki Schwab, U.s. Political Reporter
For Dailymail.com
18:57 22 Mar 2016, updated 21:33 22 Mar 2016

Hillary Clinton criticized Donald Trump for immediately suggesting waterboarding when asked how he would treat terrorism suspects in light of this morning’s attacks in Brussels.

‘Our best and bravest intel and military leaders will tell you torture’s not effective,’ Clinton said during an interview on Good Morning America. ‘It puts soldiers and increasingly our own civilians in danger.’

Torture, Clinton implored, would be an ‘open recruitment poster for more terrorists.’
